Tom Thumb eyes Turtle Creek Village for new Dallas store
A familiar North Texas supermarket chain that has zeroed in on urban locations is shopping for a new store near Uptown.
Tom Thumb is eyeing the vacant Fresh Market grocery store in Turtle Creek Village on Oak Lawn Avenue.
Tom Thumb, which has been owned by Albertsons since last year, has filed a request to sell liquor out of the building at 3878 Oak Lawn Ave., officials in Dallas' planning and zoning office confirm.
Fresh Market closed the store in Turtle Creek Village in May when it decided to leave the Texas market. The newly built grocery store had opened in 2015.
If Tom Thumb puts a store at Turtle Creek Village, it would be the third new close-in Dallas location for the grocery chain. It's opening a 60,000-square-foot store in the two-tower Union office and apartment development on Akard Street just north of downtown. And Tom Thumb will also have an almost 50,000-square-foot store on downtown's near east side in the City Lights apartment development. The grocer will occupy the ground floor of a new 10-story residential tower.
The Turtle Creek Village location will be closer in size to the Tom Thumb in Highland Park Village that closed in 2014.
Tom Thumb previously had a store in Turtle Creek Village that closed in 2001. That building is now occupied by World Market.
With the residential boom in the downtown area, grocers have been upping their presence in central Dallas.
Last year, Whole Foods Market opened a 44,000-square-foot store on McKinney Avenue in Uptown on the street level of Gables Residential's eight-story McKinney Avenue apartment community.
And Kroger plans to build a 78,000-square-foot supermarket near downtown's Arts District on Hall Street a block off Ross Avenue.
Tom Thumb representatives did not respond to requests for information about the proposed Turtle Creek Village store.
