J. Crew launching a new concept store in the Shops at Park Lane

They told us it was going to be a J.Crew Factory store. Now it’s something else. J.Crew Group says it has a new concept that it’s calling J.Crew Mercantile. The first one is opening later this month at the Shops at Park Lane in Dallas. (Any Mickey Drexler sightings in Dallas to report?)
There aren’t many details yet, but the company issued a short press release saying it “will feature a collection of value-driven merchandise with classic J.Crew style for women, men and children.”
It sounds like the merchandise is the same as what’s available at the J.Crew Factory store, based on this other sentence in the release: “Once only available in J.Crew Factory stores, the collection is designed exclusively for J.Crew Factory and now J.Crew Mercantile.”
So, they’ve peaked our curiosity, but it’s not clear how new a concept J. Crew Mercantile will be and the company isn’t elaborating. It is the first one.
CEO Mickey Drexler hasn’t been able to get the J.Crew brand growing again. Sales fell 5 percent in the first quarter and the company just cut 175 people, mostly from corporate jobs.
The discounted product at J. Crew Mercantile will be sold across North Central Expressway from a full price J.Crew store in NorthPark Center. The NorthPark store was closed this month for remodeling and now has new floors and fixtures.
