Design firm 5G Studio Collaborative uses Dallas’ new Omni Hotel to open doors

BenHill Tower is a 32-story condo 5G Studio Collaborative designed in Jakarta. You can’t find two buildings less alike.
One is a low-slung, organic-looking resort hotel perched on a wooded hillside in Southeast Asia on the island of Java.
The other is a towering reflective-glass downtown convention hotel covered with miles of colored LED lights.
Both were created by the same architect.
Dallas’ 5G Studio Collaborative got instant recognition when it designed the 1,000-room Omni Dallas Hotel at the convention center.
Now the small firm is parlaying that exposure into new projects in Asia and the U.S.
“We are an odd duck in terms of being an architecture firm,” says Scott Lowe, one of the founding partners of the 9-year-old firm. “We are a small group — around 50 folks.
“We do big projects, but we are known for the design piece, the creative portion of real estate,” he said.
Soon after the firm was founded — by former members of the Beck Group — it designed hotel and resort projects in Vietnam.
“Without that experience, we wouldn’t have been considered for the Omni,” which started in 2009, Lowe said. “We’ve leveraged that experience here in the U.S. — back on our home turf.”
5G Studio Collaborative is doing a new Marriott Hotel in downtown Austin. And the firm is working on two mixed-use projects in the Dallas area.
“We have a big project down in Gainesville, Florida,” Lowe said. “It’s a mixed-use project that will kick off in the next few days.”
But the Dallas design firm’s current push is in Southeast Asia.
That’s where 5G Studio designed the luxury hotel condo project on Java. It’s also working on a high-rise condo building in Jakarta.
And on the island of Bali, the firm has another new resort in the works.
“It’s in a booming location,” said partner Yen Ong. “It’s like Uptown — but with a beach.
“We carved a swimmable canal through that development.”
5G Studio is now working on 10 projects across Indonesia, Ong said.
“Indonesia has one of the strongest economies in Southeast Asia,” he said. “They look to the U.S. for design leadership.
“We have plans to enter China, too.”
